The Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club, a non-profit organization, is
dedicated to the promotion of cross-country skiing and recreational use of
the forests surrounding the valley. In cooperation with the US Forest
Service the club maintains the Chief Joseph Cross Country Ski Area. The
area is located one mile east of the intersection of Highway 93 and 43 on
Lost Trail Pass. The trails are groomed and tracks set every Friday during
the ski season by a group of volunteers. Over 6,000 skiers are known to use
the trails in a season.
Maps of the trails are available at the trailhead
and use of the 15 miles of trails is free to the public. The Gordon Reese
Cabin was completed in 2002 and provides a place to eat lunch, have a cup of
hot chocolate or just enjoy the view. The cabin is open (no fee) from dawn
to dusk to the general public during the cross-country ski season. It is
staffed by volunteers who shovel snow, stoke the fire and have hot chocolate
available. The Forest Service has added the cabin to its summer rental
program.
The club also offers free
instruction to the public and these sessions are especially helpful to new
skiers and newcomers to the area. During the off-season, activities such as
hikes, outings, canoe or bike trips are arranged by club members.
The club holds meetings at
7:00 p.m., September to May, on the second Thursday of each month at
the First Presbyterian Church, 1220 West Main Street, Hamilton.
(Check the newsletter, as occasionally the meeting location is changed.) Club
members and guest speakers offer programs of interest at each meeting. A
newsletter is published once a month during this period to keep members
informed of club activities. If you wish to join the club or have
questions about its activities, please contact Jack Losensky at 961-3757 or
