PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

What a great month it has been at Chief Joseph. I

hope everyone got out and enjoyed the trails and sunshine

at the area. Mel Mooers and the grooming crew have

done yeomen's work this year. Mel's emails read like

chapters from Endurance, but their work paid off in

January with well-packed, well-groomed trails for our

enjoyment.

We had a wonderful lesson day on January 17th with

40 people turning out for lessons. The day was beautiful

with sunshine and moderate temperatures which were

particularly welcomed since the valleys were locked into

a dreary ice fog all week. Our visitors had a fun, positive

and instructive afternoon. Thanks go to Mel Holloway for

organizing the day and Club members Linda Hoyt, Mike

Hoyt, Janis Cooper, Bill Stoudt, Linda Stoudt, Bill

McCrum, Kay Fulton, Pat Leonard, Dusty Samouce, Steve

Powell and Mel Holloway (I hope I got everyone who was

there). They volunteered a day of their time and an

evening beforehand for orientation. Their work, along

with the efforts of the grooming crew who spent the night

at the cabin on Friday and had the trails in tip-top shape,

made this a great success.

Earl Philips and Mel Holloway are working on a grant

that would let us offer more lessons in the future. We

appreciate the time they have spent on this.

As many of you know, the Gordon Reese Cabin is

overdue for staining which is necessary to protect it from

the weather. Last week we again started our efforts to

have the Forest Service get this done this season.

See you on the trails.

/s/ George Corn

Trail Report

January 30, 2009

There has been 10 inches of beautiful light snow this

past week and the total is now 64 inches. We groomed

and set track on all the trails today and skiing is as good as

it gets! It was a clear, sunny day and the temperature is

remaining cool so the snow is in excellent condition.

It's possibly going to be the best weekend of the

season to get out on the trails and enjoy the fantastic

scenery to go along with really great skiing conditions.

/s/ Mel Mooers, Grooming Team Leader

"A Letter of Thanks"

Just wanted to drop a line and express my thanks for

the free ski lesson day. I took the day off work and

drove from Florence to the ski area. I had never been

up in that part of the country. It was a beautiful day

graced by lots of kind and helpful people. I learned a

lot and had a great time. Took the Gold Medal loop

when the lessons were done. Pretty

intense..proving the point of always packing extra

underwear (ha, ha). "Thank you" to all for putting on

such a fine event that all the skiing community can

enjoy. Looking forward to becoming a member.

With deepest regards, Bill.

HELP US DO A BETTER JOB

Because of the difficulties we have experienced the past two winters =
dealing with huge amounts of snow, I am instituting a pro active snow =
management plan. Whenever the area receives 12 inches or so of snow, =
we'll attempt to knock the air out of it at least, but may not set =
tracks, depending on the forecast. For this program to be successful, =
we'll need your help. Please let me know, by phone (961-3163) or e-mail =
(m.mooersmt@juno.com), whenever you find more than six (6) inches of =
fresh snow at the area. I will also monitor the Snotel site. We will =
continue to do a complete groom/track setting on Fridays as in the past, =
but you may also encounter us on the trails at other times. This will, =
undoubtedly, take additional fuel but will allow us to have one or two =
relatively "normal" days rather than one or more brutal days each week =
to try to put the trails into the condition that you have come to =
expect. You may not have to break trail as much either. Thank you.

/s/ Mel Mooers

JANUARY MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

January 8, 2009

By Kay Fulton

President George Corn called the meeting to order at 7:13 p.m. There =
were approximately 45 people in

attendance.

Membership Report: Jack Losensky reported that there now 306 members (57 =
below the end of last year).

Treasurer's Report: Ed Hastings' report read by Kay: Income, $1,054 =
Expenses, $1,075.61

Checking, $3,326.68; Savings, $5,800.

Almost all of the Ski Club Map Sponsors have paid for their ads.

Upcoming Events and Items of Interest: George discussed the difficulties =
the grooming crew has had, initially, due to lack of snow and cold =
weather and then, too much snow and machine problems. They have been =
working three or more days a week. Lost Trail reported 31" since Monday =
and the temperature at 32 degrees today.

Leo Joron passed away December 24. He had been an active member of the =
Club for many years and served as Membership Chairperson for several of =
those years. We will have a more complete remembrance of him at a future =
meeting.

Extravaganza: Earl Philips reported on the ticket sales progress and =
encouraged everyone to get out and sell tickets. The stores are doing =
pretty well. There is only one month left. He also introduced Chef Paul =
Sharp.

Cancellation System: Earl also reported that there have been several =
cancellations this year. Four or five could not be filled but many of =
the others were. Be sure to contact him at skihut@montana.com .

Trail Report: Mel Mooers elaborated on George's discussion of the =
grooming. They have not yet been able to set tracks and are not happy =
with the trails at this point. It has been very difficult and =
discouraging. They did have some snowmobilers from Darby help one day. =
If anyone has a snowmobile and is willing to help, please talk to Mel. =
Thanks to the Groomers!=20

Old Business: January Lesson Day: Mel Holloway reported on the plans for =
the ski instructors to meet on Wednesday, January 14, to discuss lesson =
plans and coordination strategies. He will be sending an e-mail. The =
lessons are primarily for beginners and will begin at 1:00 PM on January =
17.

New Business: Janeen Curtis of the Bitter Root RC&D discussed a program =
called "Snow Snoops," which is part of the "Healthy Kids, Healthy =
Forests" program. See below for a complete description and information =
on how you can help.

Program: Once again Michael McEachern wowed us with his pictures (3-D =
with glasses) of the expedition he went on last summer in the Bob =
Marshall Wilderness. He started by sharing a magazine of a national =
caving organization that featured one of his trips. The pictures, as =
well as the information he presented, were truly amazing. Thanks, Mike.
